Nearly a year ago, shortly after purchasing my boat, I found out about a race just for liveaboard boats called, appropriately enough, "Race Your House." I decided immediately that this was something I would need to participate in. Two of my very good friends from NY, Lisa and Denise, decided that they would make the trip out here to join me. It seemed fitting, since they spent a good chunk of their time on their previous trip out here helping me look at boats. I managed to find enough of my Seattle friends to round out the crew, and we even had a practice day to prepare for what would surely be a very competitive race full of... houses. Unfortunately, Lisa and Denise had to cancel their trip at the very last minute. We missed you... next year!
We raced in the No Flying Sails class (no spinnaker), which had a total of 15 boats, divided into 2 starts. There were an additional 15 or so boats in the FS (spinnaker) class. We finished 4/8 in our start, and 15/31 overall.
Thanks to my awesome crew who all showed up at the right place, on time, put up with my lousy instructions, drank a bunch of beer, sailed the boat, and managed to not break the head (nautical toilet):
Here are some pictures from the event. Special thanks to Guru for taking photos of the whole thing. Unfortunatley he does not appear in any of them.
The boat in front of us in the next picture is (I think) Eric's friend Squirrel. We managed to catch them on the downwind leg after rounding the first mark, and that was the last we saw of them.
We had a good close race with another boat, Velella (which we nicknamed Velveeta), on the leg across the Sound. This led to a very exciting mark rounding with the 2 of us and a 3rd boat stacked up end to end with mere feet separating each of us. Alas, they managed to pull away from us a bit on the return leg, and we never managed to catch them.
